The University of Santiago de Compostela is a public university with headquarters in Santiago de Compostela, Galicia, and campuses in Santiago de Compostela and Lugo. It was founded in 1495 by Lope Gómez de Marzoa and is, with its more than 500 years, the university with the longest tradition in Galicia, and one of the oldest in the world.
TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP OFFICE (AVTE)
AVTE is a service of the Vice-Rectorship for Research and Innovation responsible for managing the process of transfer research results, including:
- Identification research outputs of potential commercial value.
- Protection of these research results through patenting or other suitable way
- Negotiation and dealing licensing agreements.
- Setting out companies based on research results (spin- off)
The mission of the Technology Transfer and Entrepreneurship Office is to make research results to have an impact on society through its incorporation into processes, products or services. The origin of this office dates back to 1989 and during these 25 years has helped the USC to be listed among the 10 best Spanish universities in technology transfer and innovation.
AVTE users are:
- USC researchers interested in the task of making possible that the new knowledge generated by their research activity has an impact on society.
- Innovative companies demanding new technologies or investors interested in focusing on the development of new products, processes or services.
- Entrepreneurs of the university community who are interested in starting a new business project based on knowledge.
In 1947 the Spanish State created the Consortium of the Vigo Free Trade Zone, one of the five free trade zones in Spain and the only one located in the northwest of the peninsula.
The fundamental mission of the Vigo Free Trade Zone Consortium is to promote the economic development of Vigo and its area of influence, and the generation of employment, for which it works on three main lines of action: the construction of business land, support for the productive fabric and business culture and the promotion of international trade.
NETWORK OF FREE ZONE PARKS
The Zona Franca Consortium currently has three and a half million square metres of industrial land infrastructure and business parks, which are home to 500 companies and generate 32% of the wealth of the Vigo area. Zona Franca is committed to quality industrial land, strategically located, environmentally sustainable and equipped with the latest technological advances.
SUPPORT FOR THE PRODUCTIVE FABRIC
The Free Trade Zone Consortium of Vigo, in addition to infrastructures, provides more value to companies as it offers programmes to support entrepreneurship, a complete platform for business information, venture capital, promotion and training.
PROMOTION OF INTERNATIONAL TRADE
Another of the Consortium’s strategic lines of work is the promotion of international trade, offering customs advantages and excellent warehouses at the foot of the port, for which the exceptional characteristics of the Port of Vigo are extremely useful, both due to its privileged geographical location and the extraordinary natural sheltering conditions of its estuary.
Being one of the only free zones in the northwest of the peninsula and the excellent communications with the Spanish and Portuguese markets make it a great commercial attraction.
BIOGA is a not-for-profit business association that brings together organizations in the value chain of the biotechnology sector that are based in Galicia.
The Cluster works to improve the competitive positioning of the Galician biotechnology sector, seeking competitive improvement and business generation through the promotion of actions and services directly aimed at companies in the sector.
The University of Minho, Universidade do Minho in Portuguese, is a public higher education institution that is part of the group of new Portuguese universities. It has four different campuses in Braga and another in Guimaraes.
CENTRE OF BIOLOGICAL ENGINEERING (CEB)
The Centre of Biological Engineering (CEB in a PT acronym) is a research centre located at the University of Minho (Braga) and integrated in the Portuguese Science and Technology System. In the latest (2014) evaluation of R&D units by FCT, CEB was rated as Excellent, maintaining this grade since 2002.
CEB combines fundamental science – Chemistry, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Molecular Biology – with Engineering Sciences to obtain value-added products or processes in the Food, Chemical, Biotech, and Environmental Industries. CEB is a unit aiming to be a strategic infrastructure for the development of R&D and innovation policies in the areas of Biotechnology and Bioengineering, Biomaterials, Biomedical and Life Sciences, Environmental and Agricultural Sciences.s.
La Organización de la Industria de Biotecnología de Portugal (P-BIO) es la única asociación que reúne a la gran mayoría de las empresas vinculadas al sector de la biotecnología y las ciencias de la vida. Desde su fundación en 1999, ha sido la piedra angular para el desarrollo y soporte de la biotecnología en Portugal. P-BIO busca desarrollar un ambiente que sea favorable para la creación y el crecimiento de nuevas empresas, promoviendo su desarrollo corporativo a nivel nacional e internacional.
The INL International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory, located in Braga (North of Portugal) was founded by the governments of Portugal and Spain under an international legal framework to perform interdisciplinary research, deploy and articulate nanotechnology for the benefit of society. INL aims to become the world-wide hub for nanotechnology addressing society’s grand challenges.
The INL research programme comprises four strategic fields of application of nanoscience and nanotechnology: Food and Environment monitoring, ICT, Renewable Energy and Health.
